to the Back

More than a meal. A place to belong.

The line that became a community.

When Linda arrived from Cameroon in 2023, pregnant with her son Nathan, she couldn’t believe a place would hand out food and ask for nothing in return. She came back every Tuesday, and the 9 am line slowly became a community; neighbours trading job leads and small worries, held together by the need that brought them there.

Ask someone still in that line what this place means, and you get it plain:

“Without this place, most people wouldn’t survive. We need them — big time.”

For the first two years of Nathan’s life, every diaper came from Regeneration. She expected to find food and baby supplies. Instead, she found a community that made room for her — one where, as she puts it, “No one feels downgraded because they came to ask for food.”

That feeling stuck with Linda, so much so that when the chance came to give back, she took it. Through the Catholic Women’s League at St. Leonard’s Parish in Brampton, Linda came to volunteer, walking in for the first time through the back door: past the packing tables, the cleaning crew, and the staff who’d once served her, now part of the support she’d relied on herself.

You don’t graduate from Regen

Transformation at Regen doesn’t always mean coming back to give. Sometimes it means being ready to move on — and choosing to stay close. One of our youngest guests applied for a Canada Summer Jobs opening through South Asian Canadian Health & Social Services (SACHSS) and got it: eight weeks full-time, his own paycheque, and enough to step off Ontario Works.

By every practical measure, that’s the moment a person stops needing a place like Regeneration. But he came back anyway. Returning in a collared shirt to eat his bagged lunch with the staff, and to connect the next guest to the help that changed things for him.

Be the reason someone stays.

Even after the need is gone, Regen is still where community lives. And it’s the perfect example of the work we do: the volunteers, the staff, and guests all together. Regeneration is not a service you graduate from; it’s somewhere you belong — at every stage of your journey.

Regen runs every day on ordinary things: a hot meal, clean laundry, an open door. None of which can be done without the extraordinary support from the Brampton community.

Someone they loved walked through these doors.

Our volunteers come to Regeneration for different reasons.

Some come because they have time and want to give it. Some come because they once needed a place like this themselves. And some come because they watched someone they love walk through these doors, and showing up felt like the only thing left to do.

For one volunteer, it was exactly that.

For years, she didn’t know where her son was. Then she found out he’d found Regeneration, that he was coming in for breakfast seven days a week, and people knew his name.

One day during COVID, she walked in after him.

She met the staff. She saw the space. And then she found out they had taken her emergency contact information, so that if anything ever happened to him, someone could reach her.

For a mother who hadn’t known where her son was, that meant everything.

She stayed. She started volunteering. And somewhere along the way, she became everyone’s mom.

A Mother’s Love Has No Guest List.

Guests call her “Mom” from across the room. She knows their names, their orders, their days. She showed up for her son and kept showing up for everyone else.

That’s what this place does. It starts with one reason to walk through the door. And it gives you a hundred reasons to come back.

This is what volunteering at Regeneration looks like, in the words of the people who keep showing up.

I give back to Regen because they have given so much to my son, and I’ve received so much in return. The relationships I’ve been able to build with my son’s friends, I’m called Mom by some of them.

One Door. Many Reasons.

Her story is one. But walk through the doors at Regeneration and you’ll find others.

Volunteers who came to stock shelves and found a sense of purpose they hadn’t been looking for. People who showed up once and built friendships that have lasted for years. Some who once sat where the guests sit now — and come back because they know exactly what it means to be welcomed.

Every role matters. Whatever you bring, someone needs it. And the guests notice.

“They remember you, they see you, and they know that you’re trying. That’s what makes it meaningful.”

There’s a place here for you.

Regeneration’s Dignity-First Philosophy makes shopping a hopeful experience.

The grocery store that could change everything

There’s a particular kind of anxiety that builds when you walk into a grocery store knowing you can’t afford what your family needs.

You go anyway. Doing the math in your head while you walk the aisles. Putting things back, and leaving with less than you came for. Carrying that feeling home with you.

For one Brampton parent, that was the weekly routine. Two jobs, a child at home, and a fridge that never quite made it to the end of the week. He knew places like Regeneration existed, but the fear of what it would mean to admit he couldn’t do it alone had always been louder than the hunger.

Eventually, after sleepless nights, the fear got quieter. When he walked in, it smelled like produce.

Not a storage room, or a gymnasium with folding tables. There were shelves, aisles, shopping carts, and someone standing at the door to greet him, saying welcome, take your time.

He stood there for a moment. The anxiety he’d been carrying, the kind that follows you through every grocery run, every mental calculation, everything you put back, started to loosen its grip.

When he walked in, he wasn’t a charity case. He was a shopper, a guest.

A different kind of food bank

The Marketplace at Regeneration Outreach Community isn’t a traditional food bank. There are no pre-packed boxes, no lineups to receive whatever happens to be available that week. Guests walk in, choose what they need, and leave with groceries for their family.

The philosophy is dignity-first. It shapes everything: the layout of the shelves, the way staff are trained, the items on offer. Not as a policy, but as a belief.

Because when someone walks in already carrying shame, shame about needing help, about not being able to provide, building up over months or years of quietly going without, what they find on the other side of the door matters.

Words can describe it. The people who’ve lived it can show you.

I am so grateful to be able to serve the community by volunteering, but also be able to help supplement my groceries when I come. These are hard times. I thank Regeneration and God for the blessing.

For the first time in years

Since first coming, he’s been back four times. He says he’s eating properly for the first time in years. The anxiety that used to hit him every time he walked into a grocery store, knowing he couldn’t get what his family needed, has started to lift.

“For the first time in years,” he wrote, “I am starting to feel better and better nourished.”

This is what happens when someone has access to real food, chosen by them, without a lineup or a box of whatever’s left over.

It’s what the Marketplace was designed to do.

What keeps it running

The Marketplace operates because Brampton shows up for it, through food rescue partners, volunteers, and donors who understand that $50 provides a week’s worth of groceries for ten families.

The Marketplace is where people feel that something is different. Where the transaction isn’t a handout. Where the mission isn’t written on a wall, it’s felt in the way you’re greeted at the door.

Poverty doesn’t look the way most people think it does. And neither does hope.

This February, the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) in Brampton brought our community together to support our vulnerable neighbours. The dedication and spirit of our participants and volunteers combined to make a tangible difference. For 15 years, Regeneration has proudly partnered with CNOY to provide food, warmth, and a welcoming space for people facing hardship, especially during Canada’s harsh winters.
